The Guns of Johnny Diablo – Theatre Scotland
…With clever writing and ingenious use of foley, this production brings much hilarity and ridiculousnes… Hiding in the background is the Foley Artist, performed by Nik Paget-Tomlinson. With a mixture of panpipes, guitar and a variety of percussion, Tomlinson produces a fantastic soundscape for the radio play. Paired with the cast’s looped murmerings, meows, and moos, the audience are transported into the golden age of wild western movies… Alongside its creative use of foley onstage and gun-slinging quick dialogue, this production is not one to miss.
Wickies: The Vanishing Men of Eilean Mor - Theatre Tonic ★★★★★
Bethany Gupwell's subtle lighting adds layers of emotion and prominence for giving the characters their flickers of attention and seamlessly marries with Nik Paget-Tomlinson's haunting soundscape, ultimately making Wickies triumphant in all aspects, creating an environment in which we can instantly leave the outside world at the door, and become fixated and transported to a desolate island that seems to hold many a secret.
Wickies: The Vanishing Men of Eilean Mor - All that Dazzles
…This attention to detail and effective use of the setting and set itself are shared by sound designer Nik Paget-Tomlinson. Paget-Tomlinson makes this small, easily-crowded space feel real through the constant background noise of rain and waves, always some kind of water breaking the silence. These exterior sounds are never intrusive, and always feel as though they are surrounding the stage, imitating the entrapment felt by the characters.
Wickies: The Vanishing Men of Eilean Mor - Everything Theatre
… Sound design from Nik Paget-Tomlinson along with Niall Bailey’s music gives us an impressive soundscape of the sea and storms, and its superbly complemented by Bethany Gupwell’s lighting design. It all contributes to the atmosphere. There is a lot of subtlety in the technical work too, the lighting cleverly designed to use the absence of light, the dark and the shadows and the sound subtly and beautifully changing in line with the ending.
Wickies: The Vanishing Men of Eilean Mor - Lou Reviews
… With Nik Paget-Tomlinson’s sound offering an unsettling sense of danger and isolation, and Bethany Gupwell’s lighting having some very clever twists and turns, Wickies has the makings of a classic ghost tale, spooky and weird.
Wickies: The Vanishing Men of Eilean Mor – The Stage
… T-Hyland’s production generates a genuine sense of foreboding, thanks to the cast’s skill, Bethany Gupwell’s low-key lighting, billowing smoke and Nik Paget-Tomlinson’s subtly effective sound design.
Wickies: The Vanishing Men of Eilean Mor - The Spy in the Stalls
… The set design ( Zoe Hurwitz), lighting design (Bethany Gupwell) and sound design (Nik Paget-Tomlinson) all deserve special mention. They work together to create a true sense of isolation and claustrophobia
Wickies: The Vanishing Men of Eilean Mor – Theatre Weekly ★★★★
…But it’s Bethany Gupwell’s lighting design and Nik Paget-Tomlinson’s sound design that creates the greatest sense of fear, with darkness filled with lashing waves and rolling thunder accompanied by Niall Bailey’s soundscape, there is a permanent feeling of foreboding.
Wickies: The Vanishing Men of Eilean Mor - Campden New Journal
… Shilpa T-Hyland ramps up the eerie atmosphere helped by Bethany Gupwell’s lighting, John Bulleid’s illusions and Nik Paget-Tomlinson’s sound.
Rocket Post - Corr Blimey ★★★★★
Not only auditory, though Niroshini Thambar and Nik Paget-Tomlinson’s scoring and sound design is a triumph, Constellation Point’s show understands the visual nature of Children’s Theatre.
Doppler – The Skinny ★★★★★
…Doppler is also a sensory show, and immersive in the best sense of the word. The scent of campfire lingers and Nik Paget-Tomlinson’s sound design is everywhere, merging with the forest surroundings in subtle and ingenious ways.
Doppler - The Arts Desk
…Live Foley sound effects from musician Nik Paget-Tomlinson are a joy in their own right, and only add to the sense of the show sourcing all its material from the forest itself.
Doppler – The Wee Review ★★★★
…Live sound effects and beautifully ethereal music is provided by Nik Paget-Tomlinson
Doppler – The Guardian ★★★★
It’s a tremendous performance, matched by a lovely set of cameos by Sean Hay and Chloe-Ann Tylor (variously a baby elk, a stroppy teenager and a displeased wife), set to a suitably organic Foley soundtrack performed by Nik Paget-Tomlinson.
Doppler - DVM Theatre ★★★★
… The music, sound effects and lighting were also nicely woven into the production and served to support and emphasise the natural site, rather than overwhelm or overshadow them. Similarly, by having the sound effects being created live in front of the audience, the whole performance felt much more authentic and interconnected.
Doppler – The Stage ★★★★
…Musician and live foley artist Nik Paget-Tomlinson in his wooden hut adds to the sense that the performance is merging with the woods themselves.
Doppler – The Church Times
…And although the setting is the star, Ben Harrison’s production is enriched by live Foley sound effects by Nik Paget-Tomlinson
Doppler – The Guardian
… Gruesome foley effects accompany the evisceration (achieved in view of the audience by the musician and sound designer Nik Paget-Tomlinson).
Niqabi Ninja – Exeunt Magazine
…The percussive score, composed by the Egyptian artist-musician BalQeis, clicks, paces, buzzes, the sound of an oud circling in the background, as Nik Paget-Tomlinson’s sound design meshes the cityscape with the darkness in Hana’s head. The overall event is thoughtfully set up.
Niqabi Ninja – The Stage
… BalQeis’ thrumming original music weaves thoughtfully together with Nik Paget-Tomlinson’s pacy sound design.
Niqabi Ninja – Financial Times ★★★★
… Well-crafted sound design by Nik Paget-Tomlinson creates a binaural effect and it’s impossible to tell whether sounds — a passing motorbike, a distant siren — are coming from the headphones or bleeding through from Edinburgh itself.
Revolution Days – The Stage
… Nik Paget-Tomlinson’s excellent sound design, augmented by Niroshini Thambar’s music, does a lot of the heavy lifting here. It helps the production move seamlessly from noisy markets into tents where women are gathered, or from airport halls to Samira’s accommodation.
